Michaela Coel’s star is best known for her performance in a British television series which she created, wrote and starred in, Chewing Gum. It earned her a BAFTA Award for Best Female Comedy Performance. Following its success, she created a limited series for BBC One and HBOMAX called I May Destroy You, which beautifully depicted a woman’s personal struggle with sexual assault and her ability to make sense of and process what happened.
Coel’s performance and creative mastery was rewarded with an Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special. She became the first Black woman to earn her seat at that table in that particular category at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards in 2021.
Her win alone was monumental. But her acceptance speech is the takeaway that impacted viewers the most. Watch below as she graciously accepts her historic Emmy Award.
