In an incredible story of survival, an eight-year-old boy, Tinotenda Pudu, was found alive after five agonizing days lost in the lion-infested Matusadona Game Park in northern Zimbabwe. His saga began on December 27, 2024, when he trekked about 23 kilometers (14 miles) away from his home in the rural Kasvisva community near Kariba. He unknowingly entered the dangerous wildlife sanctuary, popularly regarded for its high population of lions and elephants.
Tinotenda’s ordeal had unfolded in a large wilderness of the big game. Matusadona Game Park extends over 1,470 square kilometers or 570 square miles. An estimated 40 lions are in the park besides many elephants, hippos, and other formidable animals. According to Mutsa Murombedzi, a Member of Parliament representing the area, the boy spent his nights sleeping on rocky outcrops, surrounded by the night roar of lions and the sounds of moving elephants.
During his days in the park, Tinotenda proved to be quite resilient. He survived on fruits that grow wild in the park and applied the local mufuku method used in areas prone to draughts by digging small wells along dried-up river paths to get water. Locals call this method “mufuku,” a very important survivalist behavior that kept him alive despite the conditions.
A search party that included park rangers, police officers, and local community members was mounted immediately after he was reported missing. Heavy rains hampered the search efforts in trying to locate the boy. Community members have been beating drums every day in the hope that he may hear them and find his way back home. It was on December 30 that footprints were found in the park, prompting the searchers to try harder.
On the fifth day of his disappearance, as Tinotenda heard a ranger’s vehicle, he ran towards it. He was barely seen. Rangers came back later and followed new human tracks to him. He was found on the morning of 31st December, weak but alive.
As expected, the social media had varying responses to this incident. While some express their disbelief at this incident, others express their amazement and praise the boy or his bravery.
This incident speaks volumes, not only about wildlife perils but also about the value of communal participation at worst times. Their cooperation is exemplary in the level of unity and resolve that makes miracles happen in desperate situations.
