This year marked the first-ever Earthshot Prize awards ceremony which was introduced by none other than Prince William. The inaugural event was marked by performances from five global superstars that included British mega talent Ed Sheeran, Nigerian Afropop star Yemi Alade, Canadian pop star Shawn Mendes, international ensemble Coldplay and British Youtuber and rapper KSI. While backstage, Alade and Sheeran were caught in a friendly discussion about which jollof rice is best. Hands down, Sheeran explained his choice and what happened afterwards was a vow to visit Nigeria to put it to the proper test.

Watch as the two casually discussed the topic. The video is the last one in the carousel below.

The Earthshot Prize awards ceremony was hosted by British television presenters Clara Amfo and Dermot O’Leary, and held at the Alexandra Palace in London. The winners were announced by The Duchess of Cambridge, Emma Thompson, Emma Watson, David Oyelowo and Mo Salah. The idea behind the Earthshot Prize is for those who entered to create solutions that would have “the greatest impact on the biggest environmental challenges facing out planet” in order to win £1 million in order to scale their solutions for use. There were five winners in all.

As indicated by its site, “Every year from 2021 until 2030, The Earthshot Prize will find and reward solutions to the five ‘Earthshot’ goals, to protect and restore nature, revive our oceans, to clean our air, build a waste-free world and fix our climate. Prize winners will each receive a £1 million prize fund and tailored support to scale their solutions and realise an even greater impact of their ground-breaking work.”
