The teenage sensation was announced the winner after she received the highest number of votes to win the award, beating Nigerian vlogger, Dimma Umeh, and South Africa’s Miss Universe, Zozibini Tunzi who came second and third respectively.
The E! People’s Choice Awards is an American award that recognises the best content creators and producers on social media in entertainment, music, fashion, and beauty. This year’s edition will be the second time the E! People’s Choice Awards will open a category dedicated to Africa. The other nominees in the African Social Star of 2020 category included Karl Kugelmann, Sho Madjozi, Thuso Mbedu, Wian van den Berg and Lydia Forson.

Elsa rose to fame after her satirical videos on the restrictions meant to contain the pandemic went viral. Her contents received wide appreciation and applause from the international audience at large including Hollywood celebrities like Steve Harvey, Chrissy Teigen, Snoop Dogg, Lupita Nyong’o, Usain Bolt, and Jorja Smith, many of whom have proposed collaboration deals with her.
In an interview, she said; “Being a young black woman it means so much. In normal circumstances a young black woman or black women they just have to fight for space in any field. My content was so well received and my battle was to let my guard down and be happier. I am able to show other black women, dark skin young women, let’s not make the world make us feel like outsiders all the time, just be yourself.”
