It has been a long 18 months sans fashion week in what many would consider the fashion capitol of the world. The runway has reopened with collections from the most important fashion houses this year. Paris Fashion Week Spring Summer 2022 opened on September 22 and closed on October 5, 2021. Among the most notable presentations was a showing by South Africa’s premier designer Thebe Magugu. Debuting his second showing at Paris Fashion Week, the designer presented a poignant collection entitled, “Genealogy SS22.”
The presentation surrounded a roundtable discussion. The visionary designer utilized an idea which he calls “memory as a reservoir for optimism” as a jumping off point. The collection reimagines old family photographs into fresh looks for his spring/summer 2022 designs.
At the table, Thebe Magugu, his mother, Iris Magugu, and his aunt, Esther Magugu, all sit reminiscing on impactful junctures in their formative years. Together, they share their experiences, expressing how the precious family memories correspond to each photo presented. This occurrence is all the while juxtaposed in accordance to the fashion designs created from that moment in time captured in picture form.
