A special exhibit showcasing African fashion alongside music, visual art presentations and other distinct aspects of the African influence on the Global fashion, music and culture scene are on display at the Brooklyn Museum until October 22, 2023. In addition to featuring textiles, special footage, and photographs, there will also be iconic works on display by renowned designers and artists that illustrate the African cultural renaissance within fashion.
One of the critical display pieces involved the voices and distinct point of views behind propelling African fashion, helping to bring talented and renowned designers to the forefront of the global conversation. AFROPOLiTAiN Magazine is featured in the exhibit as one such publications. The African Fashion is the largest-ever presentation of its kind, showcasing African fashions from the 1950s to today, highlighting the ongoing fashion influence and revolution of African specific fashion.
Showcasing a dazzling array of garments alongside music, visual art, and much more, Africa Fashion celebrates the ingenuity and global impact of African fashions from the 1950s to today. Works by iconic designers and artists illuminate fashion’s pivotal role in Africa’s cultural renaissance, which laid the foundation for an ongoing fashion revolution. Many of the works from Kofi Ansah (Ghana) and Shade Thomas-Fahm (Nigeria), as well as those from the newer generation, like Thebe Magugu (South Africa) and Gouled Ahmed (Djibouti). A selection of these pieces are actually on view for the first time in the U.S.
