As a renowned Music Artist Tiwa Savage has owned the Afrobeats airways and streaming across all platforms, but today, we are honoring her in another forum. Tiwa not only stars, but also executive produces the revered film “Water & Garri.” On May 10, the film debuts on Amazon’s Prime Video, where Tiwa Savage is also featured on the film’s soundtrack. In addition to Tiwa, the film’s score also features Grammy-Nominated Arya Starr, as well as Afro-reggae artist Black Sherif, Olamide and Nigerian artist Young Jonn, who is on the rise.
As more and more global audiences are turning to the African Continent for inspiration, in fashion, like with Chanel’s Dakar Métiers d’art Show, and The Grammys acknowledging Afrobeats like with Grammy Award Winning Artist Tyla, who just stunned at her first debut at this year’s Met Gala, it is certain that there is a huge untapped market for entertainment sourced from the continent. The film “Water & Garri” is evident of that, as media and entertainment giants are ready to continue their investment into this immense market.
To add to this, the Director of Content Acquisition at Prime Video, Ayanna Lonian, stated that “audiences worldwide crave well-crafted, contemporary African narratives, and ‘Water & Garri’ delivers precisely that with a fresh perspective.” She went on to say, “both Meji Alabi, in his directorial role, and Tiwa Savage, as the lead, have truly delivered a stellar debut alongside an exceptionally talented cast and crew.”
As the film was produced by Tiwa Savage’s production company Everything Savage and the Nigerian production company Unbound Studios, it is a refreshing to know that the film’s authenticity was not affected by its conglomerate partnership. To demonstrate this, Unbound Studios production executive, Jimi Adesanya, added to the conversation, saying, “we are thrilled to collaborate with Prime Video, who grasp the significance of this cultural milestone celebrating the intersecting power of film and music, especially emanating from Africa at this exciting time.”
